Answering Our Call

Listen while you read: "Simply Trusting"1 (Lyrics)

1 Chronicles 5:20 – They cried out to him during the battle. He answered their prayers, because they trusted him. (NIV)

Psalm 138:3 – When I called, you answered me; you made me bold and stout-hearted. (NIV)

People answer their 'phones in some pretty peculiar places. One woman was wallpapering and continued to do so. Another time, running water was well within my earshot. That dear soul was taking a bath.

Recently, I called our daughter in another country and as we were speaking, the background served up someone who seemed to be shouting in their mother tongue. At my inquiry as to its source, she simply stated that she was on a street, and there was an election going on and the shouting was someone electioneering.

Further along in our conversation the background sounded busier — rustling — begging me to ask, "Where are you now?" She replied with a nonchalant, "Oh, we're in the grocery market and I'm choosing something for supper."

With today's technology enabling the caller's name to be displayed on the receiving telephone, one can choose to take our call no matter where one may be or what one may be doing.

Isn't that something akin to our spiritual life?

Several scriptures tell us that when we call, He will answer — that He will take our call no matter where He is; or to how many others He may be listening. The only difference is that when we call on Him, we are the ones with the background interference. We can call from our cars and offices; on our walks where trucks blast their air brakes, cars whiz by and trains clack along the track. We can call upon Him when our minds are clogged and our thoughts are scrambled — and He is there to answer our call.

There's just one thing. Are we there to answer His?

Prayer: Just for this moment, Lord, help us make sure our call to You isn't clogged with all kinds of busyness in the background. Just for this moment, may we give You our full attention. And just for this moment may we take a moment to listen to hear if You might be calling us. Through Jesus Christ we pray. Amen.
