Once again it is that time of year when many — like myself — decide it is time to lose a few pounds, and start to work out to get back into shape. After taking a couple of years off, getting back into the workout routine is difficult. I am very sore on account of the workouts, which does not help the motivation very much. Also, I see how little I can do now, compared to what I could do a few years ago. It is a long hard road to get back in shape. It takes discipline and dedication to overcome the inclination to just sit on a sofa and watch TV while snacking.
While I want to get back into physical shape, I cannot forget my spiritual fitness. It is my spiritual fitness which will sustain me through the trials I face in this world. How do I work on my spiritual fitness? God has given us gifts to help in our spiritual fitness. One gift is his word, in which I can read and learn about Him. Another is that of fellowship with other believers. Through this sharing, we grow and are strengthened. Another is prayer. In prayer, I can communicate with God and tell him my needs and my concerns. These are just some of the gifts we are given which can aid us in our spiritual growth.
While addressing our need for physical fitness, let us also continue to work on our spiritual shape in the year ahead.
Prayer: Heavenly Father, we give thanks for the gifts you have given us. We pray that you will empower us to use these gifts to strengthen our spiritual fitness, so that through our lives we may bring you the glory you deserve. In Jesus' name. Amen.
