52 Colouring Books

Philippians 4:8-9 – Whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable — if anything is excellent or praiseworthy — think about such things. Whatever you have learned or received or heard from me, or seen in me — put it into practice. And the God of peace will be with you. (NIV)

When I was five years old, I received the most wonderful Christmas present: 52 colouring books, each with 7 pages — one book for every week of the year, one page for every day of the week. A large box of crayons made the gift complete. I could hardly wait to get started!

As I mused over this memory not long ago, I thought about how much those colouring books and crayons were like the New Year which will soon be spread out before us: 52 weeks, 7 days in each. Like the outlines in the colouring book, waiting for my choice of colours to bring them to life, the days and weeks of our lives also await the choices we will make — choices of attitudes that will colour the way we view, interact and accept our circumstances, people we meet, and jobs we perform.

If we choose negative attitudes — ones full of worry, fear, impatience, doubt and the like — the unspoiled page of a brand new day will soon be coloured with frustration, disappointment and inner turmoil.

On the other hand, if we choose positive attitudes — ones which reinforce whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable, excellent or praiseworthy — our moments will be coloured with the beauty of God's peace and joy, no matter what may come our way!

Prayer: Heavenly Father, thank you for the brand new year that lies ahead. Plant within our hearts the desire to meet each new day with positive attitudes — positive attitudes that not only bless us but also bless all those around us. In Jesus' name. Amen.
