Angels By The Highway

Psalm 27:1,13 – The Lord is my light and my salvation — whom shall I fear? I am still confident of this: I will see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living.

Bang! What a racket underneath us! It sounded like a bomb going off behind as the van rocked violently from side to side. Scary! Scary! Now what? Waving to passing cars is dangerous but I did it anyway, with a prayer, and soon coming towards me was a young woman, an angel, with cell phone in hand. "Thank you, Lord."

Horrors awaited us as we learned that the drive shaft had fallen out of our van, bringing our summer holiday in Alberta to a sudden halt. Later we heard many stories of how others with drive shaft problems had landed up in hospital or the morgue! "Thank you, Lord."

We had been on our way to Pine Lake, Alberta. Yes, it was the same lake where a tornado had wrecked the Green Acres RV Park just two days before, killing nine people! Our resort was a mile away across the lake, untouched, but the tragedy was heavy on our minds. What would we see there? Now this! Had an angel stopped us?

Angels continued offering help everywhere we turned. An angel in Calgary, an old friend who just "happened" to be home and not away on holiday, invited us to "crash" at her house. "Thank you, Lord." Even the RV dealer back home has been an angel, paying for everything! Looking back now, we can see how God had positioned angels beside us all the way, and made what could have been a tragic accident an unfortunate incident that just held us up for ten days.

Again and again, we can see how angels went before us, paving the way — not to keep us from trouble, but to help us through. Yes, I believe the Lord's guiding, protecting Spirit always accompanies us when we pray believing in God's presence. Look at the divine intervention and explicit timing everywhere we turned. Oh! I forgot to mention that we had stopped just before this incident to check the map, and so we were only going 40 km/h when it happened. Any faster and the tale would have had a completely different ending. God had deliberately slowed us down. "I am confident of this: I have seen the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living." (Psalm 27:13, NIV, paraphrased)

Prayer: Lord, thank you for all your people who care so wonderfully for us along life's road. Thank you for giving us inner peace with the confidence of knowing you are in charge. There is nowhere we can go, no road we can take, that is outside your loving care. The Lord is indeed our light and our salvation. We have no cause to fear what may happen at any time. But encourage us, O God, to be an angel along life's highway for someone today. May we share your light and your love as we commit our way into your care and keeping. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen.
