Proverbs 8:18-21 – Riches and honour are with me, enduring riches and righteousness. My fruit is better than gold, yes, than fine gold, and my revenue than choice silver. I traverse the way of righteousness, in the midst of the paths of justice, that I may cause those who love me to inherit wealth, that I may fill their treasuries. (NKJV)
Taxes have been very much in people's minds in recent weeks. As we in Canada have prepared to file our tax returns with the Canada Customs and Revenue Agency, some of us may have wished that we had invested more into our registered retirement savings plans (RRSPs). We may not have reached our contribution limits and bemoan this fact, as we might have received a refund had we contributed the maximum allowed. Oops! We must do better next year.
But we mustn't despair! It came to me that we have a far better way of investing than in RRSPs. When we invest in Jesus Christ there is no contribution limit. We can keep contributing by helping one another as we move through each day and as we love our neighbours as ourselves. We can walk in the paths of righteousness and treat all in a just manner. This way, we are storing up riches in heaven rather than in an RRSP plan.
When we cash in our RRSPs we eventually get taxed on them. When we cash in our investment in Jesus Christ, we do not get taxed, but receive the ultimate refund — a place in eternity. The deadline for filing with Jesus is now — let us not wait to make our contributions. He will fill our treasuries.
Prayer: Heavenly Father, we are a procrastinating people. Help us, Lord, to realize that the riches we store up on earth do not guarantee us a place in eternity, but the riches we store up in heaven do. Help us to come to you today and make our contributions to eternity without delay. Thank you, Lord, for neither leaving us nor forsaking us, even when we deserve it. Amen.
