Deuteronomy 11:18 – Fix these words of mine in your hearts and minds; tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. (NIV)

One thing I have noticed while going to some churches is that many people do not carry their Bibles with them. I have always wondered why this is so. I have seen Bible studies where people come without a Bible. How can one grow in faith if one does not read the word of God? For me, the word of God is an important part of my life. I carry my Bible just about everywhere I go because I like to use my breaks to read. I hunger for the word of God and I look forward to reading it.

That is why the verse today speaks so strongly to me. We are to fix the words of the Lord in our hearts and minds. The word of God is not just something we listen to once a week at church, but instead it should be intertwined in our lives. We should find great joy in reading the word and not look at it as a burden or as something that must be done. It is a great joy for me to read the word, in order to find comfort for things that are going on in my life, to find answers to problems I face, and finally to learn about God so that my relations with him may grow.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, we pray that our hunger for your word may never diminish, but instead will increase as we grow and mature in our faith. May we always find time to read your word. In Jesus' name. Amen.
