Why Trust And Obey?

Listen while you read: "O Master Let Me Walk With Thee"1 (Lyrics)

Hebrews 13:17 – Obey your leaders and submit to their authority. They keep watch over you as men who must give an account. Obey them so that their work will be a joy, not a burden, for that would be of no advantage to you. (NIV)

My title, "Why trust and obey?", came to me as I was thinking of the time when our son went to Sea Scouts. Living on the shores of Lake Ontario, he had some experience on a small boat — a very small boat. One evening, he and his crew capsized into the cold water. It was some time before they were recovered, and they were on the verge of hypothermia. He learned one thing, that when a command was given, it had to be obeyed. He depended on the crew, and each member of that crew depended on him. I can remember him telling me that.

What an experience it was for him to learn this: not only to obey, but to know why obedience was necessary. Now, as a mother and one who wants the best (Jesus Christ) for him, I pray that he will continue to learn of Him and to obey, knowing why.

It is to Jesus Christ that we come, in the midst of turmoil in our lives. We come to trust Him and to obey His teachings, so that we may put our whole self into His tender, caring arms.

Let Him hold us in times when we cannot endure, when there seems no way to continue and no way out. For it is in trusting that, through the Holy Spirit, we are given the power to learn to come to Him, in obedience, into His presence, with reverence and prayer.

Romans 15:13 – May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit. (NIV)

Prayer: Almighty, all-gracious God, Father of us all, we humbly come into your presence to ask that your blessings be upon us forever. Amen.
