Psalm 47:1-2 – Oh, clap your hands, all you peoples! Shout to God with the voice of triumph. For the Lord Most High is awesome; He is a great King over all the earth. (NKJV)
In our new home we have a small, screened-in balcony adjacent to our loft area. This is the place I have chosen for my morning prayer and devotion time. Yesterday morning as I sat there on the balcony I just started to observe what was taking place outside. Within a matter of moments I began to witness the joyful activities of the little squirrels. Leaping from tree to tree, some chasing each other in spiral motions about the tree, others at play on the ground. As I watched these little creatures frolic and play, a tear came to my eye as I was suddenly reminded of the awesomeness and wonder of my Lord.
For the past few weeks I have been under a lot of stress, and have been working much more than normal. It was obvious that God had placed all of those squirrels in my presence that morning to serve as a reminder to me of what is really important in life. As I continued to watch the joyful play, all of the stress just seemed to flow out of me.
The squirrels were so carefree with every movement — leaping great distances in the air with no worry or concern about where they would land, and without hesitation. I was truly in awe of God — in awe that the same artful hands that had created the squirrel were the ones that would somehow "catch" him as he jumped from tree to tree.
This same awesome God has created both me and you. This same awesome God is there to catch us if ever we fall during our daily activities. So often we forget what a wondrous God we serve. We forget to take time to clap our hands and shout with joy to our Lord. We so often get caught up in all of the problems in our lives, all of the things we have to do, all of the places we have to go, forgetting that we were put upon this earth not to serve man and ourselves, but to serve and worship God our creator. God has given us so many things to be thankful for and so many reminders of His holiness and sovereignty. At any moment when we feel stressed or distraught, we need only to watch the squirrels at play to remind ourselves that God is in control. And upon realizing that, we should clap our hands and shout!
Prayer: Lord, help us today, as we pray, to shout to You and declare the joy we have in serving You. Continue to place reminders in our paths to keep our focus upon You, and not upon the things of this world. In Jesus' name. Amen.
