Out On Manoeuvres

November 13, 1999

Deuteronomy 10:12-13 – And now, O Israel, what does the Lord your God ask of you but to fear the Lord your God, to walk in all his ways, to love him, to serve the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul, and to observe the Lord's commands and decrees that I am giving you today for your own good? (NIV)

Yesterday as I stepped outside into the back yard, I heard them coming, honking all the way. I peered up to see that all-familiar V-formation of the Canadian geese preparing for their flight south. We of the north, at least in this area, know that this is not true. For the last several years the geese have not been flying south. They have been staying right here. Perhaps our winters have been more open and they have been able to get enough food to survive. In doing this the geese nest here in the spring, grow to full size and spend the winter. They have lost something. We call it their instinct to fly south for the winter months. How could this happen? They still seem to get that sense to mount up into the sky and get into formation, but they only go out on manoeuvres. They fly around for a while and then they land at the same place from which they had taken off. This is an observation of something the geese have lost. I am going to call it fear. They don't seem to fear the winter and the threat of starvation any more.

Another observation I have noted is the human tendency to do the same thing. We have lost the fear of God. Many people in this world live without any thought of their future and their final destiny. Having lost the image of God as their creator, many have no fear for tomorrow or thought for today. This is not new, as the Bible records that many times the Israelites lost their fear of God.

We can read what happened to them. We can do this, but there are a lot of people out there who are lost and they have no fear. They give no thought to the fact that God will one day judge us all. There is a hell as well as a heaven. Let us not just go through the manoeuvres, like the geese, or we will lose something much more costly than they have. We will lose out on an opportunity to glorify our Father in heaven, and instead be doomed to hell. How much time do we have till Jesus comes again?

Deuteronomy 5:29 – Oh, that their hearts would be inclined to fear me and keep all my commands always, so that it might go well with them and their children forever! (NIV)

Prayer: Dear Lord, have mercy on us who do not stop and listen, who just go through the manoeuvres without fear for our immortal souls. Amen.
