1 John 1:5-7 – This is the message we have heard from him and declare to you: God is light; in him there is no darkness at all. If we claim to have fellowship with him yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live by the truth. But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin. (NIV)
The work that I perform involves tracking satellites. To accomplish this we use satellite-tracking dishes, which are very similar to TV satellite dishes. There is the dish portion and then the feed, which is mounted in front of the dish. We calibrate our dishes using the sun as a source for power. When tracking the sun, one can tell when one is directly on target, because the shadow of the feed will be cast directly into the centre of the dish. If the shadow is off-centre at all then it is not on target and the full power of the sun is not received. If the antenna is not on target the calibration is void and useless.
We see in the scripture today that if we walk in the darkness then we do not have fellowship with God. One must walk in the light to have fellowship. What I notice here is that it is either darkness or light. There is no grey area in which we can be and still be in fellowship with God. So my life is like the satellite dish which is trying to track the sun, the source of light. If I am in alignment with the sun then I will receive the full power from the light and I will be a useful instrument. If I am off target at all then I am a void and useless instrument.
Prayer: Heavenly Father, we thank you for allowing us to walk in the light and to have fellowship with you. May we be instruments you can use to glorify you. May we never lose sight of the target, which is you and you alone. In Jesus' name. Amen.
