1 Peter 5:6-7 – Humble yourselves, therefore, under God's mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time. Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you. (NIV)
There are times in our lives when we need a piece of scripture to lift us up. In such times very often we can't find the particular piece of scripture that we think meets our personal needs. Flipping through the Bible at random doesn't work. Sometimes we think nothing will work. The other day I was talking with a woman who was in desperate need. Anxiety had moved into her life and nothing was going right for her. Have you ever experienced anything like that? I thought of the psalmist when he cried out, "Oh Lord, why is my soul so cast down within me?"
There are times when our heart cries out to the Lord and we feel that everything and everyone is against us. Depression seems to come out of nowhere. One day we feel so good, then something like a huge veil seems to cover us and there is no way out. Sometimes it is a slow process, but there is hope, and that hope is Jesus Christ. It is in and through Him that we are lifted up and we can sing, "Because He Lives We Can Face Tomorrow".
Very often the time we feel so cast down is the time that the Lord is pressing down so that He can get a firmer grip with which to lift us up. It is in God's timing, not ours, that He will lift us up. God is in control. We are His flock and the sheep of His pasture.
Prayer: God, be with us in good times and in bad. Never let us lose our focus on You. Be with us when we are cast down. Let us always know that there is hope in You. Amen.
