GO MAD

Psalm 12:1-2 – Help, Lord, for the godly are no more; the faithful have vanished from among men. Everyone lies to his neighbour; their flattering lips speak with deception.
Psalm 13:5-6 – But I trust in your unfailing love; my heart rejoices in your salvation. I will sing to the Lord, for He has been good to me. (NIV)

The first two verses of Psalm 12 sound as if the psalmist David were living and writing this today. We live in a world that has turned nearly all of its focus away from God and onto themselves. We live in the "Me" generation. For nearly two thousand years since sacrificing His only Son, God has watched His creations turn farther and farther from Him and His blessed gift. God has blessed this world beyond degree. And yet "the godly are no more" and "everyone lies to his neighbour." Dishonesty has become second nature to many people, and is often expected and even accepted in the business world.

Telling a little lie, perhaps just stretching the truth a little bit, or maybe just not telling everything you know — these are ways that are commonly justified as being okay and not dishonest. But if the tables are turned and we are on the receiving end of the game, they don't seem quite so innocent any more. Ethics and honesty have diminished not only in the business world, but in society in general.

In the midst of the ungodliness and dishonesty, David placed his trust and faith in the Lord. We need to do the same thing.

Years ago, the church I attended was given a challenge by the youth director. She had participated in a conference, and was sharing with the congregation the challenge that had been presented to her. The challenge was simply: GO MAD!!! Of course this sounded quite strange at first, but after a short pause she began to explain what she meant. The last part of the phrase, MAD, was an acronym that stood for Make A Difference. She was challenging each of us to GO Make A Difference. Make a difference by being different, by living the life that God would have us lead and not allowing ourselves to be entangled or ensnared by the temptations of the world around us; by taking a bold stand against the ungodliness and dishonesty that is present all around us.

That phrase has stuck with me for many years. And now I issue that same challenge to you. GO MAD!!! Make a difference: in your workplace, at your school, and in your home. Be different from everyone else, and trust in God, for He has been good to you.

Prayer: God, give us each the strength and faith we need to GO and Make A Difference today. Amen.
