Lamentations 3:22-24 – It is of the Lord's mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness. The Lord is my portion, saith my soul; therefore will I hope in him. (KJV)
Lamentations 3:22 – Because of the Lord's great love, we are not consumed. (NIV)
I've not counted the number of times nor the hours I've spent crossing the water from Vancouver Island to the mainland, but the scenery and experience are never the same.
Recently, aboard the 6:30 a.m. ferry, I hunkered down with a book and a decaffeinated coffee. The weather was semi-stormy so it seemed conducive to catch up on some reading. It wasn't to be. My mind chose to dart off in different directions, so I put the book away and looked out the window.
Several seagulls were sitting and standing on two separate logs, weathering the wind and rain. They seemed so safe and confident as they rode each wave lashing about them. I couldn't remember ever having seen such a sight before.
It occurred to me how like the seagulls we are when we put our complete faith and trust in the Lord. No matter what troubles beset us, what ill winds whip through our lives, what troubled waters we must tread, He is our foothold.
Though our lives may sometimes seem repetitious, though we may feel we are alone and fending for ourselves in an ocean of worries, we are told each new morning is a gift and that through His mercy and great love for us, we will not be left to languish. Each new morning has gifts to offer: a bird at our feeder, a blue spot in the sky, a new bloom, seagulls sitting on a log.
Prayer: Our Father in heaven, grant that we may see the gifts you give us each day. Let us learn to be open to see the beauty of each new morning. Through your love and mercy, we ask this in your name. Amen.
