The Goose Family

Matthew 28:19 – Go, then, to all peoples everywhere and make them my disciples. (GNB)

We drive a short distance along the highway when we go to work each day. Last week, we took notice of two geese at the edge of a slough. Each day as we drive by we watch for the pair.

I remarked to my husband: "It seems unusual to see geese stay in one location for several days." On our way home from work yesterday, I noticed four goslings in the grass, which we had not seen earlier. My husband stated: "That is why the geese are still in the same place." Later in the evening, while driving our son to his softball game, we discovered the geese were moving — the goslings were walking slowly behind their parents. They were learning how to walk.

The goose family resembles the Christian family. God uses mature Christians to build relationships with others. From these relationships spring new life, the birth of young Christians. We need to stay in close contact with the new believers for many days, weeks, and months. While our new friends in Christ grow in faith, just like the goslings grow in weight, they are learning how to walk the Christian walk.

Prayer: Loving God, we give thanks for those who have nurtured us in our Christian walk. We know the importance of Christian mentors who help us grow in the faith. Draw others to us, so that we might give back a portion of our time and spiritual gifts to build up the body of Christ with new believers. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen.
