Ephesians 3:17-19 – That Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith; that ye, being rooted and grounded in love; May be able to comprehend with all saints what is the breadth, and length, and depth, and height; And to know the love of Christ, which passeth knowledge, that ye might be filled with all the fullness of God. (KJV)
When I was a little kid, we used to sing an action song that went:
- Read your Bible, pray every day,
Pray every day, pray every day;
Read your Bible, pray every day,
And you'll grow, grow, grow,
And you'll grow, grow, grow.
Read your Bible, pray every day,
And you'll grow, grow, grow.
In the "Read your Bible" action, we held our hands like an open bible; for the "pray" part, we held our hands in prayer, and for the "grow" part, we were crouched down, and slowly stretched as tall as we could, reaching our little arms waaaaay up.
I thought that it meant I'd "actually" grrrrrroowwwwwww! How I admired tall people! I loved their long, lovely fingers, their graceful movements. Yes! I definitely wanted to be like them, so I prayed lots, and read my little bible and went to Sunday School.
I'm not sure at what point I realized that the "growing" wasn't referring to physically, but I'm sure it was well before I quit at 5 foot 3.
We may stop growing physically, but we can and should continue to grow in all other areas of our lives; most importantly, in our spiritual growth. When we let Christ enter our hearts, and are open to the breadth, width, depth and length of His love, we continue to grow, and grow, and grow.
No matter how young or old, how small or tall, we can still "read our bible, pray every day, and we'll grow, grow, grow". (The actions are good exercise, too!)
Prayer: Our Heavenly Father, we ask that you be with us on our spiritual journeys. Guide us, we pray, as we read and strive to accept your word that we may continue to grow in your love. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen.
