Bank Deposits

Listen while you read: "Holy Spirit Hear Us"1 (Lyrics)

Isaiah 61:11 – For as the earth bringeth forth her bud, and as the garden causeth the things that are sown in it to spring forth; so the Lord God will cause righteousness and praise to spring forth before all the nations.

For several years the bank behind our house was slowly slipping into the gully below. It wasn't really noticeable at first, but then it seemed to slip away at about an inch a year. No one wanted to take responsibility, so we finally had it reinforced with cables and posts and were told it would hold "for a hundred years". I won't be around to verify that.

We were also told it would be a good idea to put some more vegetation in the bank to establish a root system, to help hold it together. So today I made a few "deposits". With shovel in one hand and a potted rhododendron in the other, I climbed down the slippery slope and dug in. I planted two others also, so hopefully, my "bank deposits" will spring forth and help hold things together.

There's another "bank" into which we may make "deposits", our spiritual "bank". We can read our Bible, we can hear God's word in church, we can see the wonders of His world, we can do our best to live the life He would have us live; and if we each do our part to help hold things together, righteousness and praise will spring forth … you can "bank" on it!

Prayer: Our Heavenly Father, as we take in all you have given us, may we be ever mindful to share our wealth, our knowledge, our strengths; knowing, that as we do our part, we will help make this a better world for everyone. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen.
