In Time Of Need (1)

Thursday, March 5, 1998

Hebrews 4:16 – Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.

A while back, I was talking with a friend who is going through a divorce and was quoted the words of John Lennon: "Life is what happens when you've made other plans".

We all make "other plans". Sometimes "life" co-operates, and sometimes, "life" happens. And so it was with my friends' parents who came out to this part of the province two weeks ago to bask in its warmth and beauty, while those back home coped with the winter weather.

The mother was felled by a stroke and transported to our hospital, putting her family in a position of need. I could certainly help, and am only too glad to do so.

But this is not about how I am helping them, nor do I believe that to be the sole meaning of Hebrews 4:16.

We all have needs. Sometimes, we are forced into a position of having to accept help in a time of need. Some of us have a hard time asking for or accepting help in a time of need. Some of us need to be needed.

Perhaps, besides telling us that we should have the grace to help in time of need, it is also saying that we should have the grace to accept help from those who feel they can help in time of need, for by accepting, we are also "helping in time of need".

Prayer: Dear Lord, we thank you for these times when you put us in a position to help "in time of need". Through Jesus Christ Our Lord, we pray. Amen.
