It Only Takes…

Isaiah 53:10-11 – Through him the will of the Lord shall prosper. Out of his anguish he shall see light.

John Congram, the Moderator of the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church in Canada, and Editor of The Presbyterian Record, was in Pictou County for a Cursillo weekend many years ago and was talking about grace. He used a story about the Pacific salmon to speak of the grace of God. It lays an abundance of eggs to ensure success in reproduction. The mass can sometimes reach 10,000. Of that number 800 survive to take the journey to the sea. Two hundred live through their time in the ocean. Ten make it back to the river and two survive to reproduce… and that is enough. The story is not about the nine thousand, nine hundred and ninety-eight that perish but about the two that make it and continue the journey through the next generation.

Are we still so interested in numbers that we lose the overall picture of what God is doing in our presence? Do we know the plans God has for us, plans to prosper…?

Prayer: Lord: I am only one. But still, I am one. I cannot do everything but still I can do something. And because I cannot do everything, I will not refuse to do the something that I can do. Amen. (adapted from Edward Everett Hale)
