A Sweet-Smelling Offering To God

Listen while you read: "Come Ye Thankful People Come"1 (Lyrics)

Ephesians 5:2 – Therefore be imitators of God, as beloved children, and live in love, as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us, a sweet smelling offering and sacrifice to God.

In Canada, it's Thanksgiving and the smell of roasting turkey can drive young and old alike mad with anticipation. Some Thanksgivings I just have to get out of the house away from the tantalizing odours and walk for awhile. Thanksgiving has a smell of its own – both indoors and outside – and every smell draws memory from me and each memory prompts me to offer up another prayer of thanksgiving to God for the goodness of the creation and the glory of being fully alive. Breathe deeply the smells of Thanksgiving – a sweet-smelling offering to God -and pour out your thanksgiving and praise.

Prayer: Accept the offering we bring this day as we remember the grace you have given us. Let us breathe deeply the smells of Thanksgiving and never forget your goodness and mercy. Amen.
