John 3:16 – For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not perish but may have eternal life.
1 John 4:7 – Beloved, let us love one another, because love is from God, everyone who loves is born of God and knows God.
A woman came and knocked on my door. The story she had to tell was terrible – of a daughter in danger, of terrible abuse, of helplessness, of hopelessness, of fear for the whole family – and she asked, "What can I do?"
And I answered without thinking, "Whatever love demands."Her daughter was in physical danger and the only recourse was to find an intervention that would save her daughter's life. "Do whatever love demands," I said again, "even if you must cross the line from the legal to the illegal." I told her I had just helped arrange for a man to be taken under the adult protection act because it was the only way I knew to ensure he would be alive the next week.
In both cases God taught me this response. You see, "God so loved the world he gave his only son." God did whatever was necessary to rescue us from a tragic and fatal situation, and God would do it again and again, if it meant our salvation. In the face of the death of all that you love and cherish, what would you do?
"Do what love demands."'
Prayer: Lord of love, lead us in love to those in need. Help us to make the hard decisions and the most loving choices in order that we might show the love in Jesus Christ in all we think and say and do. Amen.
