Psalm 40:2 – The Lord brought me up out of a horrible pit, out of the miry clay, and set my feet upon a rock, and established my steps.
Years ago, workers were building a bridge across part of the New York harbour. Where one of the buttresses was to be put, they discovered an old scow, filled with rocks, that had sunk, and it was settled deep down in the mud and sediment at the bottom of the bay. Divers were sent down to position heavy chains under the scow so that it could be raised. Try as they might, nothing would lift it. At last a special engineer was called in to solve the problem. He ordered two barges. Lines were attached to them and secured around the scow. At low tide the cables were tightened up. Then the engineer ordered them simply to stand by and wait. As the incoming tide rose higher and higher, it raised the two barges, and the submerged scow shivered and shook, and finally responded, released by the power of the Atlantic Ocean. So too, by the Holy Spirit's irresistible heavenward lift, our lives can be raised from the miry clay of old habits that have dragged us down. By God's power we can find victory.
Prayer: Holy Spirit, Your power is greater than any problem. Thank you, O God, for you give us the victory in Christ Jesus, our Lord. Amen.
