The Graduate: Part 4… Love

Tuesday, June 10, 1997

John 15:11-12 – I have told you this so that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be complete. This is my commandment: love one another, just as I have loved you.

Be true to yourself, believe in yourself, and love yourself. Remember the story of Narcissus who looked into a pool of water and fell in love with his own reflection? This isn't what I mean by self love. Love of self means seeking the very best for self and for society – that is, others. It means to want for ourselves the best that life can give and to reach out and try to get it. This means, at its best, a reaching up to God for the very best life can give.

This is the way of wisdom, the way that leads to life and fulfilment.

"I have taught you the way of wisdom; I have led you in the paths of uprightness. When you walk, your step will not be hampered; and if you run, you will not stumble. (Proverbs 4:11-12)

Prayer: We're in a hurry, God, in a hurry to get on with life. As we continue the journey today, help us to bring with us the most important thing in all the world… love. We pray in the name of Him who is love – Jesus Christ. Amen.
