The Day of Pentecost

1 Corinthians 12:1,4-7 – Now about spiritual gifts, brothers, I do not want you to be ignorant. There are different kinds of spiritual gifts, but the same Spirit gives them. There are different ways of serving, but the same Lord is served. There are different abilities to perform service, but the same God gives ability to everyone for their particular service. The Spirit's presence is shown in some way in each person for the good of all.

At a critical time during World War II, Sir Winston Churchill made this urgent appeal to the people of the United States of America, "Give us the tools and we will finish the job." These famous words can be used to describe what happens when God's Spirit comes to the disciples of Jesus Christ in any age. He gives us the right tool to do a particular job.

Wisdom, knowledge, faith, gifts of healing, power to work miracles, power to speak God's message, the ability to discern between spirits (good and evil), various kinds of tongues and the interpretation of those tongues are all included in what can happen through us "when the Spirit comes."

Whatever work God calls us to do, he will also give us what it takes to do it well. This is his purpose for all of us. What a wonderful Lord!

Prayer: Almighty God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, one Lord, our hearts are filled with wonder, love and praise as we begin to realize the tremendous possibilities open to us when your Spirit comes. With your people in every age we cry "Come Holy Spirit." In Jesus' name we pray. Amen.
