Matthew 10:29-31 – Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground apart from the will of your Father. And even the very hairs of your head are all numbered. So don't be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.
I don't know if people still read John Steinbeck's award winning novels, but they should because they always have a powerful message for those who love people. Take for instance Cannery Row, Sweet Thursday, which is the story of a country girl's life in a brothel where she is a full-time prostitute. She is getting ready for her very first real date, that is, a night with someone who simply likes her for who she is. The madame of the house is getting her ready for the big event and this is a snapshot of their conversation:
"I guess you're about ready now," Fauna, the madame, says.
Suzy, the country girl, asks if there is anything she can do before she leaves for the night.
Fauna looks at her and says: "Yes, I want you to repeat after me, "I'm Suzy, and nobody else." Suzy repeats this. Fauna then has her say: "I'm a good thing. There ain't nothing like me in the whole world." As she tries to repeat this, Suzy stops and says: "Aw Fauna, now my eyes'll be red." To which Fauna says, "They look pretty that way." Suzy walks out feeling like a million dollars and worth every penny of it. When was the last time you made someone feel like a million dollars?
Jesus reminds us of how precious and how important we are to our loving God.
Prayer: Gracious God, grant us a sense of our self-worth in your sight. Let us see the sacrifice of our Saviour as a sign of how precious we truly are. Amen.
