Murphy Brown

1 Kings 19:12 – After the earthquake there was a fire; but the Lord was not in the fire; and after the fire a still small voice.

In the season finale of the TV show "Murphy Brown", reporter Murphy, who has been battling breast cancer, undergoes yet another exploratory operation. While she is "under", she is "afforded" the "interview of a lifetime", an interview with God.

I was intrigued to see how they would conduct it using her acerbic sense of humour, and yet get a message across tastefully, and, what that message would be.

The message came across loud and clear: even our pain and suffering is a gift, one from which we can learn and use to help others, and most importantly, that we are given the gift of choice, on how to use our circumstances positively, our gifts, graciously.

"Murphy" comes out of the surgery with a positive attitude and bill of health. She has learned that her bout with breast cancer was a gift, that since she was such a public figure, God was using her as a tool, an identity, a forum, for breast cancer.

My friend's mother saved certain coins years ago. She too, had breast cancer and her last words to me were that she loved me. When one of those coins showed up in my change the other day, it served as a whisper from God that perhaps someone needs to hear that they too, are loved.

Recently I was very touched and humbled when a minister replied that he felt God was speaking to him through one of my devotionals.

God speaks to us and through us, to reach us in many, many ways; whether it is slipped in through a TV show; with those little "reminders" which creep into our daily life, or directly, through thought. We will hear and recognize it if we listen, and once heard, it is up to us to act upon what He is telling us.

Prayer: We thank you Father, for the soft whisper of Your voice. Through Jesus Christ our Lord we pray. Amen.
