Trust In The Lord

Saturday, March 14, 1998

Psalm 37:3-5 – Trust in the Lord, and do good; so shalt thou dwell in the land, and verily thou shalt be fed. Delight thyself also in the Lord, and he shall give thee the desires of thine heart. Commit thy way unto the Lord; trust also in him; and he shall bring it to pass.

Some years ago Mary and I and the children were in Las Vegas for a day. I was astounded at the immense crowds and the intenseness with which they gambled. The ladies amazed me because of the amount of time and money they spent playing the slot machines. There were men playing them, but some of the women were really caught up in this game of chance.

There existed the hope that the right figure would appear on the machine and that they would hit the jackpot. They would put in the coin and hope for the best. This reminded me of the way many pray. It is as if they drop petitions in God's prayer answering machine and by begging trigger the mechanism into action. If they are lucky, there will be a good return; and if not, the lemons will appear.

The throne of grace is not a spiritual slot machine. Rather, it is a place of mercy where the Lord continually pours out His blessings. You can trust Him with your life. He will care for it tenderly. He will bless you abundantly. The confidence you place in Him will not be rewarded necessarily materially, but there will be the deep assurance of His presence, power, and love. The pattern of prayer is perfected in and through trust. Without trust it is incomplete.

Prayer: Thank you, Father, for the moment by moment grace which You daily give to me. Amen.
