As Good As It Gets

I recently enjoyed a movie entitled "As Good As It Gets". The movie is about an abrasive, obsessive-compulsive author (played by Jack Nicholson) who gets a new lease on life when he falls for a waitress (played by Helen Hunt). At one point in the movie, he asks himself, "What if this is as good as it gets? What if life will not get any better?" The movie does have a happy ending.

Things happen in our lives over which we have no control.

"What if this is as good as it gets?"

What if this is all there is, right now, at this very moment. Would you try to change certain things? Would you go on more holidays? Would you buy a bigger house or buy a new car? Or would you help out by volunteering in your area? Would you send some money overseas for a new well to be dug so that families could have pure drinking water?

What would you do?

Psalm 4:4-5 – Tremble, and do not sin; meditate in your heart upon your bed, and be still. Offer the sacrifices of righteousness, and trust in the Lord. (NASB)

If we find ourselves asking the "what if" questions, wanting more, and expressing dissatisfaction with our present situation, let us remember that God is in control and knows what is best for each one of us. We have an amazing God who is still working in our lives today.

Prayer: Lord Jesus, help us to keep our focus on You in whatever situation we find ourselves. Help us to discern what Your priority for our lives is right now, at this very moment, and then, leave the rest in Your hands, trusting You always. Amen.
