Vision Of Glory

Listen to this devotional:

Isaiah 6:1-3 – In the year that king Uzziah died I saw also the Lord sitting upon a throne, high and lifted up, and his train filled the temple. Above it stood the seraphims: each one had six wings; with twain he covered his face, and with twain he covered his feet, and with twain he did fly. And one cried unto another, and said, Holy, holy, holy, is the Lord of hosts: the whole earth is full of his glory. (KJV)

Most of us can remember specific times when something significant took place, especially occasions of unexpected blessing in our lives. This seems to be the case as the prophet Isaiah reflects back to a certain year, to an event that took place at the beginning of his ministry when he had seen a glorious vision of the Lord, high and lifted up, seated upon His throne.

Isaiah's awesome vision brings to mind a time many years ago when a friend invited me to attend a special worship service at her church. What made such an impression on me was the singing of the opening hymn, "All hail the power of Jesus' name". The singing of this hymn was accompanied by an astounding orchestra which included the unusual sound of timpani drums. That awe-inspiring moment of praise awakened my heart to a sense of God's glory and majesty in a way that I had never experienced before.

Reflecting on the scene Isaiah witnessed, I can only imagine the beautiful, worshipful chant of the seraphim crying to one another their unending, responsive hymn of praise. If these awesome heavenly beings are constrained to cover themselves in the presence of Almighty God, then how much more should we approach the Lord's throne with a spirit of awe and reverence!

Since no word of condemnation had been spoken to Isaiah, it is clear from reading the rest of the text that in the absolute presence of the holiness of God, he recognized his impurity and sense of unworthiness. While it is human nature to take pride in our own respectability, like Isaiah, we will never measure up if we judge ourselves according to God's holy standards. Nevertheless, the sovereign God of the universe who transcends all evil cleansed Isaiah from sin and prepared him for ministry.

Although we may not see the Lord in a miraculous fashion as Isaiah did, yet still we are able to behold His glory as we worship Him in Spirit and truth. Can we see the Lord on His throne, "high and lifted up"? Has He called us for service? His vision will always touch our hearts with a sense of true mission and purpose as we remain in His presence and abide in His Word.

Prayer: Lord, open the eyes of our hearts to see You on Your throne, high and lifted up. Free us from sin and fill us with Your Holy Spirit. Inspire us to humbly obey Your call, and equip us to be Your servants through Your beloved Son, Jesus Christ, in Whose holy name we pray. Amen.
