The Food Cupboard

Listen to this devotional:

Proverbs 30:8 – Keep falsehood and lies far from me; give me neither poverty nor riches, but give me only my daily bread. (NIV)

Over the years, our church in downtown Brampton, Ontario, Canada, has run what we call a Food Cupboard, praying that the cupboard will never be bare.

It hasn't been.

Though the numbers of people have increased due to economic depression, the money to purchase food and other items keeps coming in. We provide not only food, but also other essentials — like clothing, laundry detergent, toilet tissue, diapers, etc. — enough for part of a week.

A lunch for those in attendance is provided by the helpers, who come not only from our congregation but also from other denominations in the area.

A pastor is always in attendance to counsel those who ask for help, and in some extreme circumstances, to help out financially from a special fund that can be used for just such occasions.

The Gideons provide New Testaments for those who are seeking a way to find some comfort in their distress. Prayer is also a great factor in giving spiritual help to all those in attendance.

What a blessing it is to see some come back to join the church or to help others who have to come to the Food Cupboard for assistance.

Leviticus 19:15 – Do not pervert justice; do not show partiality to the poor or favoritism to the great, but judge your neighbor fairly. (NIV)

With this in mind, as we here in Canada celebrate Thanksgiving, let us give thanks to God for the abundance we have, but let us never forget to share with those who have very little, with those who do have bare cupboards.

Prayer: Dear heavenly Father, we come to You today to give thanks for those in our communities and around the world who are willing to give of their time, talent, and money to support missions that give to the poor. Thank You that we are so blessed in what You have given to us, that in turn, we can give back through You. Amen.
