Triathlon Of Life

Listen to this devotional:

Recently, I watched a triathlon being run in our city. I was amazed at all the people it takes to put this event together, and the number of people who support each athlete. These folks supported the athletes as they ran, swam, or biked each leg of the race; they offered encouragement and gave advice.

A few days later, as I was riding my bike, I began to think about the triathlon. The triathlon had a large crowd at the beginning of the event, at each checkpoint, and then again at the finish line. The triathlon is run as a solitary event, from the athlete's point of view, but it was far from that — with all the people involved in organizing and in watching and supporting.

Each of us has a solitary journey to make through life, but it is a journey in which others come alongside us and we come alongside others, in love, grace, and support.

Hebrews 12:1-2 – Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us. Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. (NIV)

Prayer: Dear Lord, we remember the journey that You faced while You walked this earth. Help us to face our journey in the same manner: in love, gentleness, and grace to all we meet. Help us to come alongside others who are struggling and encourage them to the finish line. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.
