1 Corinthians 10:23-24 – "Everything is permissible" — but not everything is beneficial. "Everything is permissible" — but not everything is constructive. Nobody should seek his own good, but the good of others. (NIV)
"Is it wrong to sin ten percent of the time?" The question recently came to my mind after I overheard a conversation where two Christians were discussing the limitations of the posted speed along the highway. "I always drive within ten kilometres of the posted speed limit," one man boasted. "I'm just keeping up with the traffic. Nothing wrong with that."
Little sins — ranging from cheating on income tax to stealing grapes from the local grocery market — have become all too common, as more and more people have adopted the tendency to rationalize their misbehaviour. But it is especially troubling when we as Christians begin to use our humanity as an escape clause from our commitment to live a holy life. Although we do not live under the law, we don't have the right to live contrary to the law, even when everyone else is doing it.
Prayer: God, cleanse us from all unrighteousness. Help us to keep our lives pure so that we can reflect Your image to the world around us. Amen.
