James 2:17 – Thus also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead.
An older lady was reading to her small grandson, Craig, from his favourite Mother Goose book. It was an action book, with pop-up pictures. But she had read it to him so often, that this time she didn't feel like bothering to make Jack jump over the candlestick, or open old Mother Hubbard's cupboard. However, Craig became very impatient with his grandmother. He was too young to know very many words, but he burst out suddenly with, "Do it, do it, do it!"
Surely this is how God feels when we read His Book. He wants action. "Do it, do it, do it!" – He wants to see some change in our lives. He expects us to be obedient to His commands. The apostle James indicated that our faith is useless, unless it results in a life that is a credit to God. Sure, it's hard to love your enemies, or bless those who curse you, but with the power of God's Holy Spirit filling us, we will be enabled to do it! as God asks.
Prayer: Lord Jesus, thank You for reminding us that "without Me you can do nothing." Give us the power of Your Holy Spirit, that our actions may be worthwhile in building up You kingdom. In Jesus' name. Amen.
