Mark 4:26-29 – And he said, "The kingdom of God is as if a man should scatter seed on the ground. He sleeps and rises night and day, and the seed sprouts and grows; he knows not how. The earth produces by itself, first the blade, then the ear, then the full grain in the ear. But when the grain is ripe, at once he puts in the sickle, because the harvest has come." (ESV)
Before going to church, I prepared some potatoes for boiling. I thought it might speed the process of lunch on our return, in the event of a delay.
Until the day before, these potatoes had been left out — because the drawer was too full to fit them in after the shopping was done on Tuesday. In our new abode, there is an open shelf next to the refrigerator, and this is where the potatoes had lain, basking in the light from the kitchen window.
When I went to prepare the potatoes, I found they had all grown eyes! As I trimmed the growth off to prepare for cooking, the following thought came to mind:
Just as potatoes grow eyes to shoot and to root in response to light that is shed on them, we who have the perspicacity are drawn to the light of the kingdom of God, and take root and shoot in the light of Jesus.
There are many dark places in the world where there is no light or growth, and no desire to see. Jesus has called us to be messengers of light, agents for His good news of grace. Like windows in the dark shroud of existence, we can be an opening for God's light to shine and encourage new life.
Prayer: Lord, we rejoice that You died to set us free from the snares of sin and destruction. Cleanse us once more, lest our light become darkness and we forget You are the Author of life. Empower us so that Your light touches the lives You bring alongside us today. Amen.
