Psalm 139:23-24 – Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting. (NIV)

While living in a rented home for a couple of months, I was not familiar with the toaster. I am in the habit of leaving a slice of bread sitting in the toaster, ready for me to push down the lever and have hot toast. When I was ready, I pushed the lever down. The bread stayed down, and I waited patiently. The toaster seemed to be working, but then I noted that it was unplugged. It only looked like it was working when, in fact, it was doing nothing.

How many of us appear the same way! We look like we are doing God's work when, in fact, we have become unplugged, and are only going through the motions. We can't produce or be effective for God or for other believers unless we are in His Spirit.

We must take care to be obedient to God through prayer and the reading of His Word, to be washed by the blood of Christ, cleansed from our sin, and humble in His sight, that we may receive power from on high to do His work in His will, to be effective, and to produce for Him.

We must make certain that we are plugged in to the power source, His Holy Spirit, at all times. Wouldn't it be great if we could be hard-wired directly, with no plug at all, so that we could never be separated from the power of God?

Prayer: Dear Lord, we come to You at times when we feel far away, when praying seems hard to do, and we feel separated from Your presence. Forgive us our sins, for You know our hearts and our anxious thoughts. If there is any offence in us that we do not see, lead us in the way everlasting. We pray in Jesus' name. Amen.
