2 Corinthians 1:3-4 – Blessed be God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies, and the God of all comfort; Who comforteth us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort them which are in any trouble, by the comfort wherewith we ourselves are comforted of God. (KJV)
Isaiah 40:1 – Comfort ye, comfort ye my people, saith your God. (KJV)
God has many beautiful ways of directing us to ease the pain of others.
One very simple way He has directed me is in making "Comfort Cushions".
It all came about when one of our hospice volunteers told me the story of his wife's battle with lung cancer, and how, when she was palliative, a nurse had said to him that one of the kindest things he could do would be to find a small, soft cushion that could be put between the surgery site and her arm to relieve the pressure from the arm on the wound.
He said that he looked and looked, but was unable to find anything that would work. Any pillows he found were too big, too bulky, or too hard, and he could not sew.
Although he was telling me this several years after his wife had passed away, I felt that it was something that I could do, and something that was likely still much needed and would be well received.
And so, in September of 2002, my "Comfort Cushions" took shape. Made of cotton/polyester or fleece (depending on the time of year), and stuffed with a special super-soft, mildew-proof, hypo-allergenic, washable polyester stuffing, over 600 of these little cushions have supported necks, knees, backs, or arms, and most of all, have offered a source of comfort to cling to in the lonely hours of the night for many palliative patients and clients.
It was no coincidence that my co-volunteer told me his story. I believe that God directed him to tell me, knowing that I could and would carry through with His instructions that as we are comforted, so must we comfort others in whichever way we can.
Prayer: May we be ever mindful, Father, to hear Your voice in others as to what You would like us to do — especially where it concerns the comfort of those in need. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.
