Speakers

Romans 8:9-11 – You, however, are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if in fact the Spirit of God dwells in you. Anyone who does not have the Spirit of Christ does not belong to him. But if Christ is in you, although the body is dead because of sin, the Spirit is life because of righteousness. If the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, he who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit who dwells in you. (ESV)

The other day, I made a trip to the refuse and recycling centre to drop off some old large stereo speakers. They had taken up residence stacked next to the storage heater since I had liberated them from my parents last autumn.

At the time, it seemed a little precipitous to dispose of these pieces of wooden history when I had thought I might renovate them. With the advent of the New Year, I had still not got around to it, so I decided that it was best just to dispose of them humanely at the refuse site.

Their warmth wafted onto my face as I took them out to the car one by one. When I carried the bottom speaker of the pair, I noticed that it had a black charred area on its side that had previously rested up against the heater.

I remembered that, with the arrival of the winter weather, I had turned up the heater to throw more heat into our living-room area, without taking into account the adjacent speakers that had become invisible as part of the clutter of the room.

I was quite shaken to think that, but for a fit of decisive action on a Sunday afternoon, they could have been in danger of setting alight the sofa in front of them, if I had decided to allow them to remain unmoved as I turned up the heat further!

On the way to the disposal site, I wondered what there was within me, like the speakers next to the heater in my living-room, that had become part of my inner clutter, and in need of action to be removed, before they too become a fire liability when next the heat is turned up on me! Fortunately for each of us, we have a God who not only sees the clutter, but is also willing to help us remove it.

Prayer: Lord, sometimes we despair that yet again we find ourselves guilty of falling short of Your holy example. We ask that You would once more walk through our inner self, and highlight those attitudes and issues that You see as clutter. By Your grace, in the name of Jesus, enable us to give them to be taken for disposal today, before they may do us harm. Amen.
