The Sounds Of Praise

Wednesday, April 16, 1997

Psalm 100:1-2 – Make a joyful noise to the Lord, all the earth. Worship the Lord with gladness; come into his presence with singing.

You are not familiar with one of the most divisive moments in St. Andrew's history, but it had to do with sound. To be more precise, it had to do with the organ controversy that wreaked havoc and division in this congregation for just over a decade, back in the 1880's. Speeches were made. Petitions were signed. Meetings were held ad nauseam. Threats were made. Families were divided. Many people left. And the issue? The use of the organ in worship.

"Gift of God", said some.
"Instrument of the devil", declared others.

What sound is acceptable in the sanctuary? What sound brings glory to God?

Can you make sounds acceptable to God with voice or instrument?

Prayer: The whole earth vibrates to the sounds of unceasing praise of your holy name. Let us praise you this day in any and every way imaginable to the glory of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
