The Lines Of Communication

Isaiah 55:6 – Seek the Lord while he may be found; call on him while he is near. (NIV)

"I really need my telephone," my friend explained to the clerk. "I'd appreciate you connecting me up as soon as possible."

"Of course! We should be able to do that within a day or two."

"I appreciate your prompt service," my friend replied. The weekend came and went. He plugged in his telephone, and waited for the first telephone call, but none came. When he checked, there was no dial tone. Well, they did say it might take a couple of days, he reminded himself. I'll wait until Wednesday. But the situation remained the same on Wednesday and Thursday. On Friday, facing another weekend, he returned to the telephone office. The clerk recognized him right away and smiled. "I came to check when I'll be getting my telephone," he explained.

The sales assistant checked her records. "Oh, the telephone was hooked up a week ago, the very day you were here and ordered the service," she explained.

Puzzled, my friend left the office, and returned home. On his way, he had another thought: maybe the telephone electrical jack was dead. It was — all week long it had been connected to the wrong power source.

This situation reminds me of our relationship with God. If we haven't heard his voice for a while, perhaps it's because we've been plugging into the wrong source, and our lines of communication are dead. However, God is still there, waiting to hear and answer our prayers, but first we have to plug in to the right source.

Prayer: Dear God, our lives are busy and sometimes our prayer time is minimal. Help us to spend time with You on a daily basis. Thank You for Your promise to be there for us. Amen.
