What Would Jesus Do?

1 Corinthians 10:31-33 – So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God. Do not cause anyone to stumble, whether Jews, Greeks or the church of God — even as I try to please everybody in every way. For I am not seeking my own good but the good of many, so that they may be saved. (NIV)

Everyone is in a hurry! One day recently, I was driving on a street near my home, when I noticed a work truck blocking one lane ahead of me. I put on my signal to warn others that I intended to change lanes to avoid the truck, when, to my shock, another van whipped past me, and cut in ahead of me! This example of careless and dangerous driving was bad enough, but the incident took on new significance when I noticed that the licence plate on the van proclaimed "WHAT WJD". I was reminded of the well-known book, In His Steps, by Charles Sheldon, in which a whole town is changed when people began asking, before any action, "What would Jesus do?" I suspect that this was what that licence plate was asking as well.

How careful, though, we Christians must be in all our actions when we display such advertisements of our faith before the whole world. Would Jesus drive like that? Are our actions consistent with our witness? When people see the way I live, do they want to be like me? Do I bring credit to my faith? Maybe the driver thinks that those unfamiliar with Jesus would not know what the slogan means, but it meant something to me. I was, for a moment, ashamed of my faith. I say, "for a moment", because I know how easy it is to be careless. I am sure I have done things more shameful. But I also learned a lesson that day.

Our witness lies in the way we live our lives from day to day, not only in the words we speak. Someone has said, "I would like to believe what you are saying, but I can't hear you because your actions speak so loudly!" We must be careful that our actions make our witness something any non-Christian would respect!

Prayer: Lord Jesus, forgive us for the times when we have shamed Your name. Help us always to be careful that our actions glorify You as well as do our words. Remind us always to ask before we act, "What would Jesus do?" Dear Master, let us walk with You always. Amen.
