Chicken Little

Deuteronomy 31:6 – Be strong and of a good courage, fear not, nor be afraid of them: for the Lord thy God, he it is that doth go with thee; he will not fail thee, nor forsake thee. (KJV)

Can you think of an instance when a nut caused a great deal of trouble? Do you remember the story of Chicken Little? The poor little guy was hit with an acorn falling from a tree and he believed the sky was falling.

Back in my hometown we had our own version of Chicken Little. One man, really a decent workingman, drank too much on Saturday night, like many in the mining town where I grew up. One night, a big block of ice landed at his feet as he walked home. He ran through the village screaming. As people became aware of the happening, a lot of speculation followed. The paper did a story that continued to run for a few days. A policeman, who investigated, said that it was the coldest ice he had ever touched. Some felt that atomic testing was causing hailstones to be made bigger. Others believed that aliens had dropped it. This went on for better than a week. Finally, one lady admitted that she threw the ice off her back porch while cleaning her freezer.

As humans, we have a tendency to panic. But Jesus promises security. He promises to fulfill all our needs and never to leave or forsake us (Hebrews 13:5). We can be secure in the knowledge that Jesus never breaks a promise.

Prayer: Father, we are grateful for your promises, your assurance, and the security for eternity that comes through belief in Jesus Christ. Amen.
