Avoiding Danger

Psalm 25:15 – I look to the Lord for help at all times and he rescues me from danger. (GNB)

One day, I was waiting in line at the automated teller, when I noticed a father, with two young children, conducting his banking activities. He carefully placed his children on a seat that was within his reach so that he could supervise them, while he performed his transactions. When he finished, he dutifully dressed the children to go outside. The oldest child, a mere toddler, was anxious to leave before everyone was ready, so she ignored her father's instructions, "Wait for Daddy." She reached the top of the nearby escalator and prepared to step on. Her father called again, "Wait for Daddy," and this time she listened and obeyed. It would have been very easy for her to fall on the escalator, and she could have been seriously injured if she had not listened to her father.

The incident reminded me of the various times in my life when God has protected me from danger. I know that God really does watch over us and protect us, as mentioned in today's scripture. Sometimes we are anxious to step out in a new direction, like the young girl at the top of the escalator, and, in our excitement, we forget to pray for guidance, and the results are disastrous. The next time we are stepping out in a new direction, let's remember to pray for guidance before we forge ahead. God will give us the wisdom we need, if we but ask.

Prayer: Lord God, we are ever conscious of your presence in our lives. We thank you for giving us needed guidance when we remember to pray about our new ventures. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen.
