Chili Cook-Off

1 Corinthians 12:13 – In the same way, all of us, whether Jews or Gentiles, whether slaves or free, have been baptized into the one body by the same Spirit, and we have all been given the one Spirit to drink. (GNB)

Recently, our congregation added a new ramp to our church, making it wheelchair accessible. Throughout the year, various events had been held to raise funds for the ramp and various related items. One event was a "Chili Cook-Off".

The day of the Chili Cook-Off, 14 pots of chili were lined up on the table. Each was unique, and many of us were surprised that 14 kinds of chili could all taste so differently. Some contained mushrooms, canned tomatoes, corn, or green peppers, with lots of beans or only a few. Some were quite mild, some had a spicy Mexican taste, while others were just hot. Everyone was given a ticket to vote for the chili that they thought tasted the best.

Following the event, all the dregs were scraped from the bottom of all of the chili pots and placed in one large pot. The concoction was mixed together and served at lunch the next Sunday following church. I heard many comments that this was the best chili of all. It was spiced just right, and had a variety of ingredients.

Our congregations are like that too. Each of us is different. We bring our own gifts and experiences to God. Some bring a gift of music, fellowship, youth work, or stewardship. All of us are witnesses to God's love. As God brings us together, we are each more useful than we are alone.

1 Corinthians 12:19-20 – There would not be a body if it were all only one part! As it is, there are many parts but one body. (GNB)

Prayer: Heavenly Father, You have made each of us differently. As we worship You, let us each remember that we have come together to praise You. Help us to use our gifts to your glory. Amen.
