What Are You Throwing Away?

In Canada, we waste about 50 percent of the food that we buy. Just imagine what effect that has on our budgets, our garbage, and our economy!

We are all just too fussy. One friend throws out leftovers because she is tired of eating the soup or stew or roast. Another one buys too much and then throws out the overload.

Do you spend $200 a week on food? Think about what you may be throwing away: $100 in cash every week.

We are all guilty, and our current celebrity cooks and authors are partly to blame. My mom used to make chicken broth by cooking vegetable bits and chicken carcasses in a big pot of water. We ate the bits and parts for supper or they became part of a giant pot of soup. A popular Canadian magazine just gave a recipe for chicken stock but they threw out all the veggie bits and bobs and kept only the juice. See what I mean?

God is not a fan of any kind of waste.

John 6:12 – When they had all had enough, He said to His disciples, Gather up now the fragments (the broken pieces that are left over), so that nothing may be lost and wasted. (AMPC)

Ephesians 5:11-13 – Don't waste your time on useless work, mere busywork, the barren pursuits of darkness. Expose these things for the sham they are. It's a scandal when people waste their lives on things they must do in the darkness where no one will see. (MSG)

1 Corinthians 15:58b – Always give yourselves fully to the work of the Lord, because you know that your work in the Lord is never wasted. (NCV)

Prayer: Lord, help us to find ways to waste not and therefore want not. Amen.

    AMEN, Brenda!

    Well said, Brenda.

A devotion packed with God’s wisdom. Thank you.

Thanks, Brenda, for this thought-provoking devotional. Blessings.

Dear Brenda, A very good message for us to take heed. Enjoy your day and celebrate International Women’s Day.

Yes, Brenda, as a single person who doesn’t like to cook, this is something I struggle with. Thanks for the encouragement to change.

    Brenda,
Another good message, delivered in a clear and concise way!!
    Thank you.

WELL SAID! Everything you have pointed out is truth! Hopefully, many are listening!

Brenda – I too am guilty of wastefulness. I never thought about God not wanting us to waste. Thank you for putting this in my mind. May God bless your continued writing.

    Hi Brenda
This is so true and how sad when so many are going hungry. Thanks for the reminder which we all need.
    God bless.

Thank you for the reminder to use every bit of what we have. I grew up in a “pioneer” family who knew how to use very last bit of everything. Isn’t it amazing how our precious Lord provides and also teaches us not to be wasteful?

Brenda, thanks so much for this message.
It is a good reminder. There are many hungry and homeless people we can be sharing with.
There is enough of everything for all – it takes kindness and thought.

    Hello Brenda,
So true that we are guilty of food waste, especially here in Canada, and need to be more thankful and respective of what the Lord provides for us.
    Thanks for this writing.
    Blessings,
    (B.C.)

Very true Brenda. I am extremely conscious of not wasting food, as we were raised that way and you would go hungry if you wasted anything as there just wasn’t enough without all those bits and pieces. But Eating has become a trend not a necessity. In our day and age. Truly we are a country who lives to eat rather than eating to live.

    Hi Brenda,
Thank you for your devotional, to it I would like to add a hearty “Amen”.
I recognize I personally need to do better when it sometimes comes to me wasting food, or praying and thanking God for the food He provides, then passing up the cauliflower as it goes around the table. God bless you.

    Hi Brenda,
Such a good devotional this morning. My wife and I both volunteer at the local long term care centre. She used to go there once a week to feed someone. She says only half the food which is put on the plates for the residents is eaten, the rest is thrown out.
We usually get a ham for family occasions, and then make lots of soup.
You are so right, the work for the Lord is never wasted.
    Thank you for writing.

    Very well said!
