Church For Sale

One of the hardest things in my life has been seeing a "For Sale" sign on our church property, especially since I was a part of the organizational process. Our liturgical congregation was drowning in mortgage debt, and the few people who were attending on a Sunday couldn't keep up with the payments. The mortgage had been a huge burden for quite some time and it appeared that that was our main focus.

We are fearful and anxious about our congregation's future. It is at times like these that we ask ourselves: Where do we go from here? Will we continue to gather as a congregation to worship? Will some of us join different congregations? Will some of us just stop going to worship altogether?

When something like this happens in our lives, we search for answers. Fearful and anxious, we desperately look for guidance so that we are able to make important decisions. We look for security that will satisfy our concerns and put to ease our worries about our health, finances, and relationships.

But God promises to be with us and to guide us. He knows our future and will direct us in a way that we should go.

Isaiah 41:10 – Do not fear, for I am with you; do not anxiously look about you, for I am your God. I will strengthen you, surely I will help you, and surely I will uphold you with my righteous right hand. (NASB)

Matthew 6:34a – Therefore do not be anxious for tomorrow. (NASB)

Philippians 4:6 – Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. (NASB)

Prayer: Lord God, You led the Israelites in a pillar of cloud by day and in a pillar of fire by night to give them light. Lead us today as we face an unknown future. Lord God, You fed the Israelites with manna to give them strength. Feed us, Your servants, with that same spiritual food to give us strength to carry on and start anew. Amen.
