My Manna Drops

Wednesday, August 4, 2004

Jeremiah 17:7-8 – Blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord, whose confidence is in him. He will be like a tree planted by the water that sends out its roots by the stream. It does not fear when heat comes; its leaves are always green. It has no worries in a year of drought. (NIV)

I was preparing a talk for a Christian Living Class and had decided on a theme of "Manna, God's Food for Today". The idea was for us to explore together times when God had met our need by speaking to us through His Word or the kind acts of someone He sent our way. To get them started, I shared how I'd prayed for confidence to read a poem in a church service, a simple thing for some to do, but a struggle for me. On Sunday morning the poem still wasn't quite ready — too many times using the same word, or the rhythm didn't flow the way I wanted — and I began to despair, wondering why I'd ever agreed to write this, let alone read it in a church ten times the size of the one I'd attended before our move. In the early dawn, I rose and checked BibleGateway.com for a verse I needed to accompany a devotional that I wanted to write. There, right before my eyes, was God's manna drop for my day. He would be my confidence.

Later when looking up my theme verse, God brought His reinforcements:

Deuteronomy 31:6 – Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the Lord your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you. (NIV)

At the end of the first class, I gave each lady a small notebook to jot down any refreshing thoughts or Scripture that God gave during the following weeks. As the weeks have gone by, it has been exciting to hear how others have discovered God's manna, His gift of spiritual food suited for their need each day. One lady said, "The notebook was too small. I filled it during the first week."

Sometimes it is hard to see God working in our life, but He has promised to provide the right amount of His love, His guidance, and His spiritual food to nurture us each day. We need to glean it daily and thank Him for His manna drops.

Prayer: Dear God, help us to be more aware of how You are supplying our needs each day. Amen.
