1 Kings 8:59 – And may these words of mine, which I have prayed before the Lord, be near to the Lord our God day and night, that he may uphold the cause of his servant and the cause of his people. (NIV)

Several weeks back, I was asked to write a few words for the "Prayer Circle" page in our upcoming newsletter, something for the closing of yet another church year, when many will be off to their cottages and on vacation.

I struggled with this, because it always seems to be a time when church programs close down, and many people seem to take a vacation from God.

Some go away to cottages or campgrounds simply to relax and take time away from the work-a-day world, looking for peace and quiet. It's a good opportunity for the renewal of the mind and the spirit and for being together with friends and family, but it is not a time to leave God behind.

I pray for those who can't find time to attend a church wherever they might be. It could be a time to expand our minds and open them to other denominations, for we are all members of the body of Christ.

Summertime is an opportunity for young and old to invest their time in giving leadership to our youth as counsellors at church camps and as teachers and helpers at Vacation Bible Schools. It is a time for our children to attend church camp and VBS.

Even during the summer, there are still many continuing needs: the sick who need comfort and the elderly who need a visit. And no, the church doesn't close its doors on Sunday! This is a time for those who aren't on vacation to step up and fill in for those who serve so faithfully in the church all winter.

Prayer: Lord God almighty, as we approach summertime, whatever we do or wherever we may be, may we never leave You behind. We pray for those who will be travelling, that You will keep them safe. In times of relaxation, renew in us a right spirit so that we may all come back refreshed and on fire for You. We pray in Jesus' name. Amen.
