Christmas – The Gift

Sunday, December 8, 2002

2 Corinthians 9:6-7 – Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously. Each man should give what he has decided in his heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. (NIV)

When I think of Christmas, I think of giving. God gave His only Son that we might have joy and peace in this life, and in the life to come. I cannot give the same kind of gift that God gave, but I can bring joy and peace to someone else, by sharing what I can with them. The saying, "It is more blessed to give than to receive", becomes very real to me at Christmas. It warms my heart to see the pleasure that a gift can bring to someone else. God's heart must be warmed as well, when He sees us taking pleasure in His gift of salvation.

Luke 2:11-12 – A Savior has just been born in David's town, a Savior who is Messiah and Master. This is what you're to look for: a baby wrapped in a blanket and lying in a manger. (MSG)

Prayer: Lord God, create in us generous hearts, unafraid to give to others as they have need. Bless us with ever-growing insight to know and acknowledge that all that we are and all that we have is from You, so that our giving may be not only bountiful, but also cheerful. In Christ's name. Amen.
