Waterproofing Boots

Ephesians 6:11 – Put on the whole armour of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.

During moose hunting season this past year, my father-in-law could not go. Unfortunately, he had the vehicle for getting into the woods, so I had to walk in to the hunting site. In addition, I needed someone else to go along, for safety reasons. My wife said that she would go. She didn't have the equipment for the trip, so we had to get her some good boots. The only pair of boots we could afford was not waterproofed. So I bought some beeswax, which works great at waterproofing leather products, and I worked the beeswax into the leather of the boots. I was able to improve the boots by applying some additional materials.

As Christians we have materials given to us by God that we can apply to our lives. We can put on the armour of God, as we are instructed by today's text. God provides us with the pieces we need to help us through the battles we face in life, armour like faith, salvation, and the word of God. God works by his great love and grace to produce faith and salvation within us; it is all God's work. We cannot have faith without hearing the word of God: the word of God which guides us like a beacon in the night; the word which became flesh and died for us so that we may have salvation. Without God working these things within us we would not be able to put them on as armour. Without them we would not be spiritually waterproofed, and when the rains came, the waters would saturate us. But with the armour that God has given us, we are able to repel the evils just as beeswax repels water.

Prayer: Lord, thank you for giving us the materials to help us through the struggles of life. Thank you for loving us and caring for us. Thank you for showing us how to wear this armour so that we can grow in your love.
