A Family Reunion

Sunday, June 7, 1998

1 Corinthians 3:10,11 – According to the grace of God which is given unto me, as a wise master builder, I have laid the foundation, and another buildeth thereon. But let every man take heed how he buildeth thereupon. For other foundation, can no man lay than that is laid, which is Jesus Christ.

It seems the older we get, the more we want to ensure we have a "firm foundation". Family reunions are one way in which many people choose to maintain that "insurance", or "assurance". One thing is for sure: you do "reinforce" your "foundation".

Our little Canadian branch of the family tree was contacted by an American branch for one such event last year. Neither side had known of the other's existence. My elder brother went as the only Canadian representative among eighty-something unknown relatives. At the insistence of the "patriarch" that the momentum not stop, my brother and I, along with a few others are now planning a Canadian version for next year.

This of course, commands a tremendous amount of correspondence, and e-mail saves the day. As these are all virtual strangers to me, as am I to them, we operate on the trust established last year when the "foundation" was "reinforced".

There is another firm foundation which has been laid for each one of us to build upon. We are all working towards meeting the "Patriarch" who loves and trusts us. What we choose to build on the foundation which has been laid for us will determine the type of person we present to God when we finally attend that "family reunion".

Prayer: Our Father in Heaven, we know that our journey on this earth is but a pathway home. May we make each step count, each action a positive one, and each thought, a kind one. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen.
